Now, I'm known generally as a strong conservative, Christian, old fashioned, don't-take-nobody's-crap kind of girl, but after hearing the truly moronic arguments for banning baggy pants, I have decided that they should no be banned under the law.
First of all, the government should not EVER be allowed to tell someone they can't dress a certain way because it is "offensive". At least not something this minor (I draw the line at walking into a grocery store wearing nothing but your depends adult undergarments and a smile) But seriously now, you cannot ban an article of clothing for it's "offensiveness". There'd be no stopping the psychosis. Who'se to say Christian crosses shouldn't be banned because they upset athiests and Moslems? Why not ban headscarves as well? aren't they "demeaning to women"? And what about grannie's polka-dot mumu? I find that offensive on a billion different levels.
And then there's the argument that you could "conceal a weapon".... Uh,.. you don't need baggy pants to do that. Heck, a denim jacket with an inside coat pocket is enough for a tazer, a hoodie hides a handgun, as does a purse. Heck, for all you know I could have a shank strapped to my calf right now, and all I need is some jeans that flare a bit at the bottom.
And furthermore, banning it doesn't solve the root of the problem. It's a nice kind of "cough medicine", it relieves the symptoms, but the viris is still there.
These kids wear baggy pants because they look up to the "bad boy image" but what we need to do is teach them that these are not the people to be emulated. If they could stop for one second and realize they've been looking up to what is essentially scum, they'd drop the fashion on their own.
But this isn't to say I'm OK with baggy pants... lemme tell you, whenever I see it it bugs the living crap out of me, and guys, let me tell ya from the "cute poular girl" perspective... I'd rather date an African wild dog than a "ghetto gangsta". Just a tip.
